Gonna be quick - 11's dying to use the PC...
I am unfortunately not going to post a travelling diary. When I synchronised my Palm, on which I'd written it, it vanished into bit hell
Pics will come at some point, though - got originals as well as backups of those

Hypatia said what I was thinking...taste, whether it be in art, beer, or Japanese food, is subjective. A few conversations back we were all bemoaning Thomas Kincade. Despite our disapproval, there *are* plenty of people in this world who consider his work art. Nothing any art snob (or anyone educated to appreciate "real" art) says will change their minds.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you can't argue with personal taste. Different things speak to different people for very personal reasons. For instance, I prefer photography to painting. Not because I don't understand or appreciate the painter moving beyond what is to what it represents, but because photos speak to something inside.

I have a problem I'm not going to be home until the 7th May...I'll have missed the vote if it's on the 5th...anything I can do now to make it so someone else can place my vote for me?

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Mar 31, 2005
Only five new postings since I left w*rk (at 5 pm) and now (9 pm)?
What's this? Surely not more ban collie days? Or is it that now that most Salonistas said it's OK with 2k threads, we feel we've got all the time in the world and can afford to take it easy?
Sorry, it's just that my brain was hoping to catch up with some fascinating stuff after leaving some very tedious and brain-numbing w*rk behind...
Oh, and I did enjoy d'E's photo link - so many beautiful pictures! Yet another site bookmarked...
Sorry to hear about your Palm Santra - but surely you can re-create some impressions from memory? It won't be as inclusive, but maybe more exclusive?

I would try to be mentally stimulating, but I have been going crazy with learning DMVPN and I am pretty sure that my mind is mush now.

Personal taste (another function of education) may be inarguable, but art is not defined by popular vote. I hope not, anyway.

It may not be defined by popular vote, per se, however those that appreciate "fine art" all seem to be rather cliquish(sp?) to me. Those present excepted of course.

Knowledge of art is yet another gaping chasm in my education - and yes, I do think it helps to be 'educated' about art because it adds another dimension to what you're looking at. The whole business about allegory in paintings fascinates me and I'd like to know more.
I'll always remember the light-bulbs coming on when a music teacher talked us through a piece of classical music - the name of which escapes me just at the moment but it was about a river's journey from source to estuary. To be able to pick out the tinkling spring, the polkas of a peasant wedding celebration in a field beside the river etc really made the music come alive and, for me, it changed from being just a rather pleasant arrangement of notes into a story which I could read with my ears.
Now if someone could do that for me with art!
Slight sideways Uk drift - does anyone remember Sister Wendy? The nun who had a series on tv in which she talked at length about a diffferent painting per programme. There was something a tad incongruous about an elderly nun, in full habit and wimple etc, standing in front of a 'nude' and expounding enthusiastically.
Wish I'd watched the whole series , then I might know more than I do.

Kat,
Can't you apply for a postal vote? I'm being bombarded by them from all the political parties to get a postal vote, because I'm a student and they want me to vote [though why the Torys are voting I've no idea ]

Some art snobs can be quite entertaining. I've always liked the criticism and writings of Robert Hughes.
