Diagnosis: hard drive crash. It's been fixed and all is well.

new question:

I got a gig house-and-dog sitting for June which will amply pay for a dongle, for my computer. What I don't know is how the speed will be. It's a Virgin Mobile Broadband to Go, and it's listed as "3G speed". How will it compare in speed to my 1.5mbs modem at home?

Good Doctor Zomnker (This must be Tuesday," said GDZ to himself, sinking low over his Dr. Pepper, "I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.")

Lil,

Here's the instructions in that link pared down to what you need to know:

1. Make sure the CD drive is connected
2. Start\Run\Regedit

3. Click file and export, save it to a location of your choice.
4. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Class

5. Look for 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318, there are several items that look like this so be sure to click on the correct one.

6. Look for Upper Filters in the right pane, if it is there, delete it
7. Look for Lower Filters, if it is there in the right pane, delete it
Note: If you don't see either of the filter types, this won't work, close regedit without changing anything.

8. Close regedit, restart.

I created a backup, went to LOCAL_MACHINE then copied the key from your post and used the search function, since I don't have the exact folder tree that you listed. I kept hitting F3 and found several instances that had Lower Filter ( = tcmdpst) in the rigght pane, but they wouldn't delete.

Any other suggestions? Should I maybe download a codec bundle?

The issue that I believe you have is one where information about your drive is incorrect, new codecs are not likely to fix it. I'll send you a screen shot of my registry tree in FB.

Well, I went into my device manager, and found that the netbook thinks I have a Samsung SE-8084D, while what I have is an SE-8084. Maybe I should remove it and add the device again...?
