Hi
Wondered if you could help me here. As an Ystrad Mynachian (if such an expression exists) born in the 60's, and therefore lacking in Welsh as a language, I need to check a translation. We live in Germany (though hopefully not for too much longer) and have finally decided to take the plunge and acquire a Welsh terrier (my childhood companion). I want his kennel name to be Welsh and my limited research tells me that "Cariadus Colwyn" should mean "Dearest Puppy". Am I barking up the wrong tree here or is this more or less right? Would love your help on this, oh Great Wesh Master

Ystrad Mynachwr? Stradi?
Cenau (pl. Cenawon) is the word I would use for puppy. Colwyn appears in the dictionaries but I have never heard it used and I think it is a more historical and/or literary word.
My translation skills (and dictionaries) are limited but I think "Cariadus" is closer to "Loving" than either "Beloved" or "Dearest". "Annwyl"("Dear") would be enough, or "Annwylaf" ("Dearest").
My basic suggestion would be "Cenau Annwyl" ("Dear Puppy"). Better still might be "Annwylaf o Genawon" ("Dearest of puppies") - much stronger and more poetic but maybe a little over the top?
You might ask this question on the newsgroup WALES.CYMRAEG where the issue can be discussed by a much larger group. You'll get a better quality of answer.
Oh, and a C in O-level Welsh Language does not make one a Great Welsh master! My Welsh teachers would have fits of laughter!

Nevertheless, thank you (little) Master... Though I'm afraid he has already been registered, I hope it wasn't too wrong as his "Home Name" has caused many a problem with the parents who prefer the likes of "Taffy", "Brandy" etc...!
Still here he is: [URL removed by moderator] Ta
