I'm not really here Started conversation Feb 22, 2014
I try to keep this to a minimum but really my life is work (which is dogs) family (which is dogs and one Teenacher) and hobbies (mostly dogs, and where not, for instance cross stitch, I nearly always stitch.... dogs).
So.
Where was I?
I'd forgotten now....

Thanks Party, glad you posted this
Do you know any tricks or techniques to keep a dog quiet in a crate?
We have a 10 year old who we find barking when we get home and a neighbour just got a 4 month old puppy who whines loudly.
Any advice appreciated

Is the 10-year-old a bitch? Perhaps she just has motherly feelings towards the puppy she can hear whining and wants to comfort it.

The dogs do not live together, or even within hearing distance of each other. Both are studs. We did have them together most of the day Sunday, while the puppy's owners went into town. In both cases I believe they are looking for attention and somebody to come let them out. We have used our crate over the years, but got out of the habit, in our new home we need to use it to prevent random destruction.
Thanks

Random destruction is usually boredom (if it doesn't happen every time and you can't predict when it will happen) or attention seeking (if it's MASS destruction with lots and lots of things chewed). Boredom is easy to fix (walk your dog more, do more training, play more games) while attention seeking is usually taught as a puppy by redirecting them onto a toy when they chew the wrong thing, coming home and saying WHO DID THAT and pointing out all the chewed things to the dog. There's a chance it could be stress related as well as it sounds like you've recently moved.
Attention seeking barking has a specific pattern to it - set up a video recorder and post it online and I'll tell you why she is barking.
