I'm not really here

My DVD for this evening (courtesy of postal rental - the best idea since the beginning of ideas) is Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom. I'm not sure I should be admitting that really considering some of the reviews it got and that it's apparently banned over the entire world, but I think I've got a remake so it should be ok.

I've also see it described as a 'beautifully shot film', 'artistically constructed' and apparently it can be 'viewed on many different levels'. So that's why I'm watching it. Honest.

It was the BFI copy - I'm not sure why it had (2001) on the title when it was clearly the 70s version. All those moustaches and bushy private areas. You know, in the garden. smiley - winkeye

I thought it was a dreadful film. I know the story as I read the Marquis de Sade, but it seemed as if a lot of the dialogue wasn't subtitled. I turned it off before the end, very tedious and boring. Long pauses with no talking and no action! No murder or maiming - well, one bloke got machine gunned. I was very disapointed. smiley - blue

It could well have been at the end - the last part is called 'Circle of Blood' but I just couldn't bear to sit through any more of it.

There was one beautiful outside shot of the castle they were in, but apart from that there was just this manky old hall that they kept gathering in. Oh - one women had a beautiful dress on. The rest of the film just seemed grey.

The film is only loosely based on the 120 Days of Sodom. Pasolini wanted to give it a more modern perspective and based it in Fascist Italy. It's still quite chilling, I thought.

I've got a list of around 100 movies that they pick from to send me when they've got something in. It looks like I'm getting The Christmas Shoes which can't have been very high on my list. smiley - erm I've also just sent back Santa Clause 2, and Finding Nemo. So they should be sending some more soon.

Do they send you the last 80 choices first on your list then your top 20?

It seems so. smiley - sadface I once had to wait nearly three months for my number one, and I only counted that because it was a new movie when I put it on my list and I remembered the date it had been released.

I had one the other day that was in the top ten, but mostly they aren't very good at sending the ones that I really want to see. I don't argue much though - as I watch them as soon as I can sometimes even getting them back in the post the same day, it means that I'm renting DVDs for around a pound each. Much cheaper than visiting the store, and I can do it all from home!
