The "Museum of Welsh Life" at St. Fagans - about 400 yards(!) West of Cardiff should not be missed. Its features contain a small museum and a large house (the 'castle') around which tours are taken. However, it is also home to numerous Welsh historical buildings which have been saved from demolition and transported to this spot. They include a Tollgate, Farmhouses, a Chapel, a Tannery, Mills, Terraced Cottages, a Miner's Institute and even a Cockpit! The museum is very much alive with special events and costumed staff. Buildings are not selaed but rather people are encouraged to explore.
It is an ideal location for a Spring/Summer stroll through the grounds, topped of by a picnic. A great family day out.

It also has my old parish church from Pontarddulais. And 400 yards may be optimistic!!!!!

Coming into Cardiff by train from the West (and looking northbound) you look at the distance from the Castle to the first modern (i.e. crappy orange brick) houses that poke through the trees.
400 yards may be optimistic but 800 yards seems about right from memory, although admittedly this is 'as the crow flies' and is not to the entrance.
St Fagans once won a UK-wide cricket competition for villages. Apparently there was some disquiet as other cricketers came to realise that this village had a catchment area of some 300,000 people!
