The infamous 'fact' that Birmingham has more canals than venice is, sadly untrue - it was made up some years ago by a council employee as a publicity stunt. That's the trouble with these 'facts' that float around - they're rarely checked out.

Perhaps both claim and counter-claim on the canals issue could be backed up with some actual figures? How many miles of canal are there? Is the mile the best way to measure a canal anyway?
