h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Rather than telling everyone about my boring life, I'm opting for a haikuthon. Two haikus a day, making 62 in all.

Here's the first:

Houses through raindrops
waver, cease to be solid.
No-one comes or goes.

A late summer rose
flourishes scarlet blossoms
defies dismal sky.

I love haikus, but alas, I can't seem to be able to write them, I will read your with much interest

I think the knack of writing haikus is to concentrate on a vivid image. It's like using a few brushstrokes to paint a picture, you need to keep it simple.

These are my haikus for November 2nd:

I make walnut bread -
sink my fingers in warm dough,
squeeze, stretch and pummel.

Bake the risen dough.
The fragrance fills the kitchen,
hot and enticing.

These are my haikus for Saturday 3 November. Supermarket shopping haikus - I'm not sure they work.

Rows of Barbie dolls,
toy quad bikes in big boxes
line the busy aisles.

Piles of biscuit tins,
racks of champagne and cheap wine
prepare for Christmas.

These are my haikus for Sunday November 4. We went looking for mushrooms in Ashdown Forest in the rain, found nothing and got wet.

Water flows down paths,
fills streams that hurtle blood red,
splash foaming in pools.

Our feet sink in mud,
tread down leaves newly fallen
from golden beech trees.

Monday 5 November.
These are yoga class haikus;

I lie on my mat,
raise my left leg high and stretch,
lower and relax.

I stand on one leg,
wobble and put my foot down
decide to opt out.

I like the forest ones - seasonal as well, which is in line with the Japanese approach...

I know I'm stretching the haiku form rather!

Not to mention your legs...

6 November haikus. I think sprout is right - it's easier and more effective to write vivid descriptions of natural things.

Frost lies in hollows,
but hawkbit heads stand up proud,
yellow on silver.

Blackbird clings, awkward
to a twig where red berries
provide winter food.

Can I do Christmas cake making haikus?

Mixed fruit and chopped nuts
are soaking in cheap brandy,
glossy and scented.

I tip four egg whites
in mixer, turn the dial,
white froth fills the bowl.
