This sounds bizarre, but if you moisten a small square of tissue paper, and stick it to the forehead of the hiccuper (hmm - is this a proper word?) - they will be cured!

Another never fail cure straight from the garden shed is: Place a paper bag over the Hiccuper's head; tie tightly; remove after several minutes and bury in the garden. What you do with the rest of the body is not quite clear and has been the subject of intense disagreement.

Strangely, it also works if you blow, hard into the eyes of the afflicted...but only if they're not expecting it!

I remember a piece on Record Breakers back when I was a kid, about some poor chap who'd had the hiccups for years. If I remember correctly (and surely I wouldn't have imagined this) they were trying to cure him by getting him to inhale the smoke from burning elephant dung...

My personal favourite cure is to take lots of small sips of water while holding my breath. Just holding my breath has never worked for me.
Another cure that is said to work is to get the sufferer to place a paper bag over their mouth and nose. The sufferer breathes into the paper bag, which eventually becomes full of carbon-dioxide. After a time the hiccups stop. This 'cure' is also used for hyper-ventilation.
One thing which does NOT work is 'relax and think of something else, and they'll stop.' Why do people say things like that?

Holding your breathe, this is apparently another very good cure for hiccupers?....The only major problem, and why it may be a cure is due to the fact that breathing is required to sustain life! ' Just a thought '
