Granted, this comes rather belatedly, but mention should have been made of the Grateful Dead and Phish among other bands that typically extend their compositions in concert by jamming.
Otherwise, a decent, if cursory, overview.

Grateful Dead were like THE jam band. Heres a way to mostly identify bands that are based more on live jams then recordings. Do they sell more cds or tickets.

yeah i know but what i mean by that is the grateful dead and phish and the like did live jams-people went to see them more than they bought records.
