lol. No, Dr. Laura doesn't.
ZM posted this:
'fellow humans used 'love' or 'God' as a *justification* for doing the screwing'
Which I found particularly ammusing. People say I have a warped sense of humor..

I must admit, I listen to Dr. Laura quite often. Its very entertaining to me. Most of the time I find myself yelling back at the radio. I just feel so *right* when I listen to her. I feel so *superior* when I listen to her, and her callers! It is a guilty distortion of reality.
The Dr. Laura show is a call in radio show where folk call in with a "moral dilema" that Dr. Laura solves for them if she is in the mood. If she is not in the mood, the caller gets treated to a brow-beating.
Some of her advice actually makes sense and I would say I agree with her advice often. BUT some of her advice is based solely on the bible, more specificly the 10 commandments. (I'm sure it has NOTHING to do with her being the author of a book about how the 10 commandments are applicable to everyday life .. no no not at all ) That advice I really hate. It would be one thing if the reason for an action was "it is more beneficial..." or "it is healthier..." or some LOGICAL or EMOTIONAL reason or benefit other than "it is God's law."
Dr. Laura is a moralizer, and her show unlike most talk radio is NOT a forum. There is only one viewpoint on the Dr. Laura show: Dr. Laura's. It is NOT up for discussion.
If you are into a Sado-Masochistic or Dominant/subversive kind of thing, the Dr. Laura show can be very enlightening. Dr. Laura is the ARCHETYPE of a Dominatrix. Her callers are wonderful examples of submissives, who gladly relinquish thier will to Mistress Dr. Laura. If a submissive, I mean *caller* ever questions Mistress Dr. Laura, OUT COMES THE (verbal) WHIP! And she can be punishing...

billypilgrim-I got that same e-mail! I can't remember who sent it to me, but it was either my mother or someone from school. I thought it was really funny. I myself have never listened to Dr Laura's show nor do I ever wish to.
Back to why people get angry and are dissapointed with 'love' and 'God' in the same way. I think it's because both of these 'concepts' are *supposed* to fill some need in our lives, and when they don't, we get upset. It's because we have to fill our own needs ourselves. If you rely solely on an outside force to make you happy, you are going to be dissapointed. And 'love' and 'God' both get such a build-up from 'believers' that when it doesn't happen the way we've been told it should, we don't know what's wrong and just feel cheated.
This reminds me of a short story/essay by (I think) Langston Hughes called 'Salvation'. It's about him going to a revival and all the other children getting up and getting saved and he is the last one, b/c he didn't feel the things he had been told by his elders that he would. In the end he ends up lying about it (I think). That story broke my heart, to think what it must have been like to be a little boy and think that God was reaching out to everyone else but you, just b/c people had made it out to be something it wasn't.

Outstanding letter, billy!
Under the old system, this forum would still have some growing room, but until things are improved (and after all the flak Jim Lynn has had to endure, I assure you, change is on its way) I'm going to employ a "three click rule"... if you have to click more than three times to get to where you want to be, it's too many. Business Thread IX is now open.

Ooops!! I'm clearly not used to the new system; somehow I thought a message from yesterday was the last one, and clearly it wasn't. That last post of mine was a reply to someone asking if Dr. Laura has a good sense of humor.
*sigh*
This new system will take some getting used to.
