A Conversation for How do I...?

How do some have avatars and I (and most that I've seen) get this little unisex mummy/dummy/whatever icon by their name? I want to use my old avatar if possible.

What old avatar? We never used to have any before we had the new skin.
Anyway, you'll have to go to your preferences and upload a picture, then wait for the moderators to say yes or no. smiley - smiley

What avatar? Well, I made one, based on the pic that used to adorn my personal space. Think I have it lying around lj at the moment. smiley - smiley I've been to settings a dozen times and still haven't seen a place to upload a pic. Where am I missing it, in case I don't find it this time, either?

By the way... in another conversation, I'm running into the old pre-mod bug. In trying to break it down to figure out what was keeping me from posting, even the simple word, "Yes" would not post. This _has_ to be a glitch. This was the original, if it works:

Yes, indeed. Thank you for that (comic). Like the categories above-mentioned, and I'm sure there are more. Re the "Official" vs "Under" guides, I rather like the idea, but I suppose with the proper "tags" there may not need to be a division.

Well, that was odd, posted fine here, but still can't put it where it belongs: http://www.bbc.co.uk/user/U500175/conversation/reply/F1599166/T8065847/P106354136

The only way I've been able to add an avatar is to go to the iPlayer home page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/). At the top left of the screen by the BBC logo should be your name. Click on the little downwards arrow and then again on 'Profile'. That is where you can upload an avatar.

In terms of posting, the filter is still broken, although we have had progress and they now allow the < and > tags (smiley - somersault).

It's probably easier to carry on using your old skin until the next release of patches for the new skin.

For some mad mad reason you have to go to BBC iplayer first to set up a profile there before you can upload an avator to h2g2 settings.

As VIP said, I didn't see that.

You can't post anything to anyone elses super secret journal on the new system, so I think that is the parallel universe problem.

I wish I _could_ use my old skin. I want my goo!!

iplayer? I tried going to that link and got a 404. What is iPlayer and why would I go there when I don't even allow iTunes on my computers anymore to use my iPod, which has now become just a stick.

This was in a conversation _off_ her journal, which I was directed to from twitter. (I think the h2g2c2 folks.) They did ask for comments, and others have obviously had success posting. I ended up just leaving it all in a message off her personal space.

As for Avatars, I suppose it's really a bit of bad timing to want to use one now, with hootoo being in such limbo, but it sure would be nice to get to use it just once. Now if I can just figure out where to do it....

Are you guys maybe talking about the "public profile" thing for the beeb? It's the only thing I could find. And the link didn't work due to the final ) being included. Fixed that, but all that is with my name is "settings", no "profile" and it's on the left where it always is. Probably not the same thing at all. Look folks, I know I'm getting older, a bit hard of hearing, not quite as sharp in the eyes as I used to be, but I didn't thing I was completely blind yet. Why is it always me that has the weird errors?

Yes, it's the BBC Public Profile thing. I did that originally, but now h2g2 will be sold I won't need it any more, I never use any other BBC site, so I removed my avatar again.

For some odd reason barlesque will let you reply/post to threads like this one, but NOT to other people's journals. I reported the bug. I won't use barlesque until that is sorted.

Oh, and since journals and message centres are being treated the same, I had the suspicion I wouldn't be able to post to somebody's message centre, either. Your link confirms that.
