Can you borrow a baby-walker truck, a scooter or a pram or something to temporarily deal with the fear of falling until you are used to the skates? If you found a quiet enough time and carpark you could use a supermarket trolley for practising (NB in a busy place you'd be in the way or get hurt). You still have to learn to steer and stop though and eventually you'll need to get more confident about your balance and give up hugging the trolley or railings.

Are they rollerSKATES or rollerBLADES? Rollerskates have four wheels in twos, and blades have the wheels all in one line. Either way, if you have a nice friend, get them to tsand infront of you and walk backward with you hanging on so you can get used to standing up on wheels first.
THEN you can start taking steps. Skating you have to adopt a sort of...strolling walk...pushing your foot forward. If it's blades then it's exactly the same as iceskating, and you're pushing off with each foot so you end up bending your knee.
To stop....
Skates...the brake is at the front. Using the brake isn't the only way to stop but it's a good start. you need to bend over slightly, sticking your bum out backwards and your head forwards, otherwise when you put the brake on the floor you'll fall over from the difference in weight distribution. Try to get your feet in one line. I found that bit really difficult, but otherwise one foot will keep going when the other one has stopped.
If it's blades then the brake is at the back. You need to use exactly the same position but putting the back of your foot down instead.
I hope that's a start. Any questions or further explanation needed and I'm right here.

I more tend to call it outward or sideways, at least that is how I think I do it.
Only backward I am aware of what I am doing with my feet, but I suggest to start forward.
Learning kids to ride a bicycle is also a good way to practice. Just make sure you can use their breaks if really needed."

Traveller in Time just drove some lines down and made a turn facing upward
"Pattern left on the pavement after you have made the wheels wet
Take care not to drive on sandy places, the bearings wear fast enough. Balance is great, elbow, hand, head and knee protection advisable. "

You mean when you first start moving? Most people have one foot that they favour and go a bit wacky with the other one. When I first started I hardly used my right foot at all, just kept it on the ground going straight

somebody gave my advice once - to put my feet in a " V " position and then to strech my leg forward while the other leg is giving me a push and keeping me in balance ... and i can do that but only and just literally that ... two moves and i stop ... than again two moves and stop ... it is very tiresome
