How do you learn the basics of break dancing so you can go take lessons without looking like a clueless moron?
My friends tell me I should try Breakdancing, and it does look fun!

Ummmm...
Go take lessons and look like a clueless moron.
Then you can go somewhere else and take lessons and look like someone who went somewhere else first so that they wouldn't look like a clueless moron.
There was this guy the other night who was breakdancing while he was drunk, and although I think he would normally know what he was doing if he was sober, he looked like a clueless moron who had just got a concussion from ramming his head into a drainpipe.

learn to uprock/top rock 1st (ie:- movements from the hips upwards) and practice in fron of the mirror.
wear something loose but comfortable to practice dancing in.
If you do any martial arts, basic kata movements are very close to some breakdance top rocking moves. work on flexibilty in your fingers, wrists and elbows, it makes you moves look crisp and well executed.
find yourself some old school breaking tunes (I recommend "Beatbox by The art of noise, Tour de france by Kraftwerk and Din da Daa by george kranz to practice busting some moves to) and work on syncronising your movemnts to the beat. don't listen to the music, feel it and let it take you over.
Buy Breakdance (AKA Breakin' in the USA) on dvd and watch the section on how turbo and ozone teach kelly basic moves.
If you feel you have mastered some good top rocking moves then progress onto footwork, a 4-6 point cross over (the running backward and forward style move you see a lot) start slowly and get faster until it looks effortless. then maybe try and learn a runaround (hands on the floor running the feet around the hands, it's quite easy to learn but you need the space).
wear something comfortable if you intend to learn backspins, even more so if you want to learn headspins.
some moves to bear in mind, helicopters, king tuts, robot.
DO NOT! REPEAT DO NOT try to learn how to suicide.
It's bloody dangerous and can cripple or kill you if done incorrectly.
If you want to find someone to read up on try looking up information on Crazy Legs from The Rock Steady Crew.
He is a breakdance god and still rules even now!
