A Conversation for How do I...?

Is there a way to start a new conversation in my own space?
I can start one in other people's spaces, but it doesn't seem polite.
Thanks in advance.

You can easily start a conversation on your own space. Just click on "My Space" to get there and the click on "Leave a Message". Here is a shortcut link to do the same: <./>AddThread?forum=101846&article=854327</.>
However, I have to wonder why you want to do this. Not many people will see the message and reply. If other people have added you to their friends list (by clicking on the "Add to friends" link they would see at the top of your space) then it would be much better to create a journal entry as a way of starting a conversation.
If you want to talk to a particular person, it is perfectly proper to leave them a message, but normally not many other people will join in. If you want to chat with lots of people it is better to start a conversation under an appropriate article page, such as <./>MiscChat</.> (general stuff), <./>Askh2g2</.> (for collecting opinions) or indeed this one (for getting more technical/factual advice).

You CAN start a new conversation by using the discuss this entry button on your home page, but this won't appear on anyone else's conversation list, so it could be a bit one sided.
If you just want to jot down some thoughts you can use your journal, and the conversation will appear on the list of anyone who's addded you to their friends list.
If you want to start a conversation with a particular researcher, or just say hi to someone do it on their space. It's not merely not impolite, it's positively welcomed by most researchers.
If you want to ask a question or discuss a particular topic try ask h2g2 A148907 Lots of researchers hang out there.
Hope that helps. If you need any advice just ask.

To start a new conversation in your own space it's best to make a journal entry. That way anyone who has you on their Friends List will receive the message automatically.
However, if you haven't been around for long enough to make friends you may not get much of a response.
You can start a conversation in your own space by clicking on the Discuss this Entry link. However, it's a bit like talking to yourself and you may not get any replies.
If you're looking for people to talk to, drop by and leave a message on their spaces - it isn't at all rude. Also, add people to your Friend's List so that their new journal entries appear in your conversations list.
A very good way is to start a conversation is to ask a question at <./>askh2g2</.>

Very many thanks. I am a member of a group which uses h2g2 for amongst other things, playing word-based games.
Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your help, Noggin. I'd surmised this, but as you say, it could be a bit one-sided.

Thank you, Amy - all help is useful to us wrinklies, even if, perhaps especially if, we started out in this technology decades agao and then went to other things.

Hi Seannachie
For your game playing a member of your group could create a guide entry page as a base and then all your games could be conversations hanging off that page.

I'm not convinced you have enough wrinkles to act as velcro. Someone could give it a go though at the next meet. It would be an important scientific investigation worthy of AIR.
