A Conversation for How do I...?
How do I ... embed a link in a post?

The GuideML is simple enough for embedding internal or external links in a PS, or an article. But if I want to refer to The Post, or the Info page, in a common conversation, what is the linking method? I mean, plugging in something like http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/info is rather ugly.

Put < . / > before the word and < / . > after it, without any spaces:
< . / >Info< / . > without spaces becomes <./>Info</.>

For external links, there's nothing you can do except put the full URL.

I knew there had to be a simple and elegant answer. Thank you.

Use <./>NamedEntries</.> to see the list of the internal links that are named and work by using Gnomon's suggestion.
> Links to researchers work by simply putting in their U number eg U219930 (without need for < ./ > bits, also not needed for the other internal links you may want to achieve below),
> links to entries by their A number, eg A6359556
> links to conversation threads have various qualifiers enabling link directly to a particular post (skip, show and #pi) but the simplest way is to copy the relevant last bit of the address - the bit after the skin name starting with the F number and including the thread eg F30859?thread=1639063&show=20&skip=0#pi5 (the F number links to the journal of the researcher, the F number and thread to the start of a particular thread, the qualifiers return the thread from a certain point showing a certain number of posts)
You may accidentally include a hyperlink by putting in something h2g2 recognises as a link eg C273 (which is the C number (Category) for Christmas).
Hope this additional info helpful. It is poor netiquette to include the skin (classic, alabaster, brunel, did I forget any?) in a link eg h2g2/brunel/A663626, which force the viewer into a particular skin.

Meant to say in netiquette example something like: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A663626

Although it may be poor netiquette, it doesn't actually matter, because h2g2 is designed to ignore the skin in hyperlinks. It can be quite tricky to design a link within h2g2 which will change the skin.

I was probably confusing it with links in h2g2 scouts messageboard where the skin does make a difference.

Embedding links in a personal space is done differently - using what is called mark-up language.
On h2g2 the language used is called GuideML. If you want to get a personal space with links in it is not *too* hard, there are plenty of entries on using GML (use the <./>NamedEntries</.> link to see the official help pages, and quite a few researchers. You can also steal other researchers code and copy it into your own space (though it is polite to credit them).
I can't explain it all quickly, try going to <./>GuideML-Clinic</.>
If you have any problems or need more information post again here.
