I think I might be considered an "all rounder" in your eyes. I like radiohead as well as basement jaxx. I love "street spirit" but you can't dance to it. you talk about release, I don't know of a single metal band that can compete with the prodigy, chemical brothers or the chrystal method or any number of lesser breakbeat or hard tchno bands In the way their music moves you, literally.
And as for the deep, soulful stuff bands like radiohead and R.E.M get pretty stiff competition from bands like portishead, lamb, massive attack, and many other groups many of which probably never will have or have need for a guitarist.
I've tried to name only the more famous bands, I could introduce you to numerous others, perhaps you should try to expand your horizons further instead of dismissing us "all rounders" as people who have no real appreciation of music.

A fair point... i understand it may sound stereotypical but the type of people i think are all rounders.. are the ones who never actually look for the meanings in songs... they're the kind who likes music because it sounds good. Obviously you are different, Lamb are amazing! i saw them play one of their first ever gigs ina grotty little club.. very good.

I didnt get the guitar thingy... Massive attack have a guitarist... i think most of Mezzanine has guitars on.... The main guy of portishead (cant think of his name at the mo) plays the guitar. And anyway, i like songs with and without guitars, words, violins, etc.

I love lots of different kinds of music... as long as it has some kind of meaning, which is why all-rounders annoy me..it seems lost on them, they just dont care. Which is absolutely fine..some people like music, some people love it.

The main thing that annoys me is that music has become so fashionable.. i guess it has always been to an extent.. but with the media and all, i think the all rounders are the ones record companies target their music to.. and thus we get manufactered pop bands making exactly the same songs. and the all rounders love it because it sounds nice. oh well im going to stop ranting... i could go on..

oh and finally.... The chemical brothers and the prodigy? hmmm not too sure about that... so listening to "smack my bitch up" moves you? Ok, they quite good but the only song of theirs that would move me was No good() , the three albums have never been amazing. And the chemicals bore me.. their first album was very good, but others are just boring.

bands i recommend you to listen to......

Mansun, K's choice, BT, Heather Nova, Beth Orton, eto, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Red snapper, Aphex Twin, q - ziq, fsol, anything off the moving shadow label, photek, muse, Tori amos.

Hi, sorry it took me so long to respond, I hadn't noticed the reply.
I must admit that you surprised me, I didn't really expect any reply and got a surprisingly well informed one. It's always nice to meet people who love music (as you were saying- some like it, some love it).
I love what lamb do with the guitars (as well as their use of other instruments) the guitar has a kind of coarse, gritty power that can't really be achieved with any other instrument. It's done well by several other bands, prodigy (have you ever heard "their law"?), Apollo four forty (highly recommended), juno reactor, and many others.

P.s
I am moved by "smack my bitch up" it really touches upon the slenderest chords of my soul.
