Ahhhhhh, no mention of the googolplex? My last math professor told me that it has the distinction of being the largest number defined by a name. Incidentally, it -- the term, not the numeral -- also appeared on an episode of the Simpsons as the name of a movie theater. Love that allusive commentary.

Whoops! Thanks, Crescent. That's what I get for making a late-nite entry. And I call myself a researcher! (Well, I don't, but h2g2 does; quite the stringent criteria, eh?)
As for the Simpsons episode, I'm afraid I don't remember which one. Someday I'll catch it on a rerun and update this forum accordingly.

I've only watched one episode of the Simpsons with the sound switched on but lets not forget that in chapter 25 of the The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the first book) we find that Deep Thought is "a greater analyst than the Googleplex Star Thinker in the Seventh Galaxy of Light and Ingenuity which can calculate the tragectory of every single dust particle throughout a five-week Dangrabad Beta sand blizzard".

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
