The lakes can always be enjoyed as a point of scenery, pretty much year round. My apartment looks out on the poor sister of the lakes, St. Clair, which always affords a great view.
Each Lake has a well-kept highway system that circumnavigates it. It is ideal for motorcyclists and campers. The views are incredible, people are friendly (even in the US), and the prices are cheap (even in the US).
