I really need some help with changing my email address. I've just left Netscape Online (AOL in discuise, grr...) and moved to Virgin net, and have been trying to change my address so that mail now comes to my new address. I had a password set up so I can get to my home page and alter details but it wont let me change my address, it keeps saying 'connection timed out' in large unfriendly letters.

I've tryed a number of times and now think that somehow it's taken my address and pretends that I've set up a new ccount with it bescause when I just retryed it says that theres all=ready a user with that address. I searched for this address and there isn't. It was lying. So I need someone in a high place (ie with access to the server) and remove this spurious mail adress so that I can then alter my details and get back my site.

I do have my very first welcome message which gives me my key to set up my site. I've done this and that doesn't work.

Old address:
[email protected] (phew, that was a bit long)

New address:
[email protected] (oh thats better)

Nick just click on preferences.
If you are in Alabaster it's at the top of the page if you are in Classic Goo it's in the left hand margin.

There you have a section for e-mail address and then you can change it for yourself.

Ah, but you see I've done that. At first it said that no response from server was found or something and now (i think I may have tried to log on with my new address or something) it says that the address is used by a current researcher. Searches reveal no researchers with that address.

I need someone in a high place to remove this spurious address. OH, umm... do researchers get automaticlay removed after a time of not visiting? Hmm.. no coz it isn't a researcher. DOh.

At lease I set up my password thing before or I would have been stuck.

Just wondering... Did you receive the register e-mail to your new e-mail account or not?? Because if you didn't I don't think it can be preventing you from changing the address... (in which case - stupid advice but - try again...) But if you did I wonder if the towers could be asked to remove this 'new user'... (and no, no one gets automatically removed no matter how long they stay away...)

And of course one solution is to complete the registration for the new e-mail address and enjoy the multiple persona disorder...

When I first signed up it was 2 addresses ago. When I first changed addresses I made a mistake and ended up havein to creat a new account which became my laptop account. This time I changed, Exploorer wouldn't even let me update my details saying it timed out. However i think it did somehow tell H2G2 my new address and so h2g2 recognises this address as used even though it doesn't have a user page attached to it. If I could find this page it would be fine as I could change that account to another laptop email (we are a house of many laptops) and then regain my account as my new email address, as I did before.

If anyone knows anyone in a high place could you ask them to talk to me.

So I assume that you didn't receive the register-email? And you've tried again?
ok, I'll see what I can do to find a solution...

I have only just been sent a reg e-mail with at the top

OK, now I will proceed to set up this new account, change the adress of it, then change my original to my new address. Simple, yes that's right.... wish me luck.....

I found it, it's like being traped inside a computer. The new acount is this one. Anyone want it? I need to log this to a new address!

Great it works now... You could make something really interesting out of that account and no one would know it's you...

No no no no no, I don't want it, really! I need to change the address on the new account to free up my new address so that my original can have the new address and I can remove the whole old internet account from my system (it's really messing with it).

Anyway I allready have a second account (Hooloovoo) whic came about the first time I changed my email adress.

All I need is someone with a free email address so that I do the swap.

I mailed Abis but it hasn't got thruough. I think that the whole H2G2 mail server has gone down.

I'VE DONE IT *wiping sweat from brow and trhowing it in the spall pool thats developed nearby*
