That name is total skill by the way!!!! Another of the little bits of Welsh I know (Copis,Araf and Pontypandy!!!)
As this is about wales, could you help me clear up something? My Geography teacher says Dolgellau is pronounced "Dol-gel-oo",but I have always pronounced it,as have the rest of my family, "Dol-geth-lie". Which is right?!?!?!

Shame on your geog teacher!!!!

The AU is pronounced as eye, so your folks are pretty spot on. Dol-geth-lie will get you by, but to be really accurate you need to work hard on the LL in the middle. It's difficult to describe, but it's like saying the letter "L" with your tongue touching the top of your mouth and slightly blowing out while you do it. Don' try this while eating biscuits.smiley - smiley

..........I've only been doing it 3 years...... but I think you said something about a dog..... (Hey, this is good isnt it? I've got to speak for 2 mins in Russain about myself and I'm not even sure what dog is......)

Roughly it means:
"Excuse me, but I had to see a man about a dog."

And yes, 2 minutes is a long time...

If it's not impolite to ask , how did you obtain that valuable piece of information?

It was the excuse I'd worked out for being late for class, but, unfortuneately, I never got to use it because my Russian teacher (or rather my teacher of Russian, because he wasn't actually Russian) never asked me why I was late. Indded it was almost as if he expected it, and would only show surprise if I ever turned up on time, or handed any homework in. In fact I think the most surprise he showed was when he found out I had actually passed my 'A' level.

But that was all far back in the mists of ancient time... it's now more than ten years since I gave it all up, and look what I've got to show for it now... a couple of useless phrases. "Ya doomayoo shto Davveed Oistrack igrayet ochin hurasho" being the other one.

Hi (soz, I thought I'd written a reply!!!)
Well done for passing!!!!!!
And I'm not even going to make a guess at what that other phrase is(seeming as though my best suspitions were perhaps a good ostrich called David..........<cough&gtsmiley - winkeye

"I think that David Oistrack plays very well"

David Oistrack being some famous Rusky violinist, iirc.

I didn't realise I never replied!!

Why not ask a Welsh friend to help you??

OK I'll do it
"Twll" means "hole"
"Dyn" means "Man"
"pob" means "every"
and "Sais" is the general term used for "English(man)" so put them all together and you have a whole new insulting phrase to amuse your mates with.
The literal translation reads as "Man Holes to every English(man)" or in proper swears: "Arse-Holes to The English"

1) Why not ask a Welsh friend to help me? Easy - I don't *have* any Welsh friends. I'm English.

2) Just what did I say in this forum to spark of such an undeserved insult?
