I realise that Clarisse seems to have left the building, and that this entry has not been submitted anywere; but, regardless, I think that a bit of correction and detail is called for given the sketchy nature of the entry.
[In 1966 a fictional rock group named The Monkees busted onto the scene and caused quite a stir when it was found that they did not play the instruments they claimed they played on their albums.]
The group was indeed created for the TV show, but that does not really equate to being fictional. The auditioned members practised as a group before the show's release, but had only become so good when they found that the tracks had been pre-recorded in New York at the direction of Don Kirshner.
They did not play their own instruments on their first two albums; they played each others. Just kidding. As mentioned, they were not allowed to play on their first albums because hectic filming and promotional schedule; but they succeeded in getting rid of Kirshner in time to record their third album without the session players.
True, too, that they didn't really live together in a beach house. Yes, that was the show and not real life.
Headquarters could be called their showcase album, but they didn't exactly put it out themselves. They still had the backing of Colgems, producers, recording engineers, marketeers, etc.
Kudos for realising that the band had value, but it's also a bit of misinformation to call them entirely underrated. In 1967, the Monkees albums outsold those of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined.
As for their movie, Head, where else do you find a cast that includes the likes of Annette Funicello, Sonny Liston, Frank Zappa, Teri Garr, Victor Mature, Toni Basil, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, and Ronald Reagan?
