Hi "my Ace" -- I gather you go by "lil"?

Why is h2g2 known as "hootoo" rather than as "hoogoo"?

In re what I've snipped below, and what I've read about h2g2/BBC copyright policy, can you please tell me if I'm understanding it correctly? As I understand it, anything submitted to h2g2 remains the property of the originator, but the BBC has unlimited liscencing rights to use it. Especially if it's used unchanged, is the originator credited?

TIA for your answers.

you wrote: "H2G2 is a living, breathing guide to Life, the Universe and Everything, and it's something YOU can take part in. You can write entries on all manner of subjects, and if it's something you think would look good in our Edited Guide (where all the best research goes), you can submit it to Peer Review. Take a look at the writing-guidelines for more information on that.

smiley - wow

You certainly know how to ask the questions smiley - doh

Firstly, we call the site 'affectionately' hootoo as in H2.

Ummm... *puts on thinking cap*

If you write anything in h2g2, you hold copyright to that material. However, in signing to join the site, you have agreed to allow the BBC to use all, or a selected part of your work, in other areas belonging to the BBC.

You maybe acknowledge by your Researcher Tag, or just as a "Researcher" from this site.

If you ever find any of your work is printed outside of the BBC without acnowledgement, or even plagiarised (as happens in W*k*)you have the right to have your work removed.

I think that's it. No doubt, if I'm wrong, those who know better will advise you smiley - ok

It's Hootoo because h2g2 refers to Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy; which contains two letter "H"s and two letter "G"s...i suppose "hootoo" might acknowledge that it also contains two "T"s?! Or just be much easier to say (& certainly easier to type on my French keyboard!smiley - winkeye)

Anything you write on here; you still own the copyright, & can use it elsewhere *but* you are giving the BBC permission to use the material (and possibly edit it) so: if, for instance, you wrote a wonderful poem on here, then thought "hang on, i think i can sell that!" yes, you could, but any agent or publisher worth their salt would ask you "has this been published elsewhere?" which of course it has.

So: you wouldn't be able to offer "First British Rights" or "First Worldwide Rights".

On the plus side, you can legitimately claim to have had your writing published on a BBC website with a very large international readership!smiley - winkeye

However, that was the case before the internet, blogs, You Tube, all sorts of self-publishing like this took off.

I would read the Writing Guidelines very very carefully if i were you.
