I was shivering in the wings of the largest theatre in Hong Kong waiting to go on as Cinderella's fairy godmother. The part was loosely based on Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life and I qualified for my wings in the end, having changed the pumpkin into a Barbie car that I had to push as I hadn't managed to spell any fuel.
The following five years I had a few lines in the subsequent pantos where incompetence excused my inability to dance or sing in time.
Boy, do I miss it and have sent my best wishes for a successful opening of Sleeping Beauty this evening. Very good luck to anyone else having a go this, and remember "it's behind you" all too soon.

My son just called me last night to tell me he's off next week to start his first panto season. He's a techie, and of course first week is tech week, sorting out all those light sound and magical effects. The downside is, of course, he wont be home for Christmas
