I used to think Alaska was part of Canada as it's so close to it's borders but I found later on that it used to be part of Russia. I have also read that the cost of living there is very high but recently dropped in the past few years due to better better transport links. I think they are between 12-13 hours behind GMT.
One of my favourite puddings in the 70's was Baked Alaska pudding, we covered the ice cream roll with home made meringue and was quite an easy dish to make and the only hard part was making the meringue.
