Just realised that...
… Dharam paaji turned 70 today. All rise and hail one of Bollywood’s finest ever (yes, you there, rise and hail even if you don’t agree)! (No links, as these ones don't work in this context)
But, sniff, a 70-year-old Veeru? A 70-year-old Satya? A 70-year-old Dr Parimal? Anyone reading this who can see how tragic that is, be warned: that means you’re getting old too!
(My previous tribute to Dharmendra here. And a nice profile from Rediff here.)
P.S. While in this On-This-Day mode, The Griff reminds us that today is the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s murder. Nice sketch, Peter.

I'm intensely glad there were commas around 'sniff'

The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi died recently at age 89.
He appreciated the Beatles' admiration until he found out they were abusing drugs.
Yogananda was very popular, particularly in California, in the 50s and 60s. I admire his translation of the Rubaiyyat of Omar Khayyam, though he threw in some things about reincarnation that Omar would not have considered cool.
But I've never heard of any of the people you mentioned, Jab.
Sorry.

Don't worry, Paul, neither have I! I think they're all Bollywood stars or something - it seems like an Indian showbiz column or blog. I found the idea of another me, and based on Lewis Carroll's books too of course, out in New Delhi, to be an odd juxtaposition and it struck me as funny, especially with my wilful misreading of the, sniff, Veeru thing and the sudden introduction of John Lennon's murder and his apparent linkage with someone called Peter's nice sketch. Very bizarre, especially as a disquisition on age.
I didn't write the main part of it, of course - it was an objet trouvee from the internet somewhere.

The only Bollywood film I've seen was "Monsoon Wedding."
Some people (even some Indian people) find it irritating
when actors in a scene suddenly start singing for no particular reason, and then just as quickly stop singing and go back to dialogue. But I liked it in "Monsoon Wedding."
I also liked "The Namesake," particularly the performance of
Kal Penn, previously best known for his work in "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle." This man has an extraordinary talent, and I hope to see his future work.

Well, "Namesake" was not a Bollywood movie, but the female star of it, named Tabu, is a big Bollywood star. She is very good. I would not mind seeing her Bollywood output.

There was a Bollywood star called Shilpa Shetty on Big Brother over here last year. I don't know what her acting is like but she's very beautiful and bears herself with dignity. You may have seen her on the news being attacked by an overage Richard Gere, supposedly a Buddhist, in a very prolonged, very unwanted, lustful embrace onstage at a rally against world-wide hunger, I think it was. Or perhaps it was only news here because she'd been in BB. Indian women/men can be very good looking, as of course can the women in h2g2...and the men......

Nope, haven't heard of her. I know who Richard Gere is.
I should get out more, but it's winter now, and it takes forever
to button up all the layers of clothing I have to wear to keep from freezing my off when I go outside....
