Has anyone else seen Subway's recent Five Dollar Footlong commercials? They have a catchy song.
I was willing to go along with it at first, even if the deal meant a half-dollar increase in price for the sandwich I normally get when at Subway, until I saw the version of the commercial that had a Godzilla knock-off monster in it.
The monster held his hands apart to demonstrate that the sandwiches were a foot long.
I have a problem with this. Godzilla, and most other giant lizards in Japan, are larger than many skyscrapers. Holding one's hands apart as he did would not be a foot.
Now, if Godzilla had just kinda held up a hand and indicated size with his thumb and pointer finger, then *maybe* I would've gone along with it.
*Sigh*
...the plus side is that this is apparently the only thing worth ranting about for me.

I'm good with that rant.

Now, now... everybody knows that character is really a man in a Godzilla suit and those buildings are only models. So, in that context, the advertisement works.

On the other hand, an increase in size like that would certainly justify the increase in price. I mean, Godzilla, as a mutant lizard, may not be familiar with exactly how long a foot is. I mean, for starters, he's been living in Japan, and they use the metric system. So perhaps the sandwiches are actually a "Godzilla Foot" long. A "G-foot," if you will.

Sounds as good a thing as anything else to rant about. And this coming from an American (make of that what you will).

But Irv, if it was a G-Foot, then what about the many other non-Godzilla people in the commercials advertising for footlongs?
It's also a bad commercial if they're being misleading about what the standard for a "foot" is when they say foot-long.

That's an excellent point, Affy. I'm glad I don't watch TV, and I make my own sandwiches.

I second Irv on all points, although I should add "unless I'm feeling lazy and feel like dropping US$2 at the student center ..." to the bit about sandwiches.
Uh, hamburgers don't count as sandwiches, right?
