I don't like the phrasing of Senate Bill 1, Section 220.
It looks like it's designed as the Senate, as a whole, saying "Get off my lawn!"
I mean, what's their definition of "Influencing" people to contact congress? It's like the section was written specifically for putting a choke hold on blogs. Especially since it doesn't apply to corporations large enough to not be influenced by the cash that implementation would cost the owners of said blogs.
Nedless to say, I've already contacted my Senators about this, through email and phone call. I don't want to see Penny Arcade shut down if Tycho points us towards a senate bill that could affect video game users, or something crazy like that.
I know Senate means well, and that they're trying to get rid of corruption, but...gah! It doesn't just stifle freedom of speech, it puts a damper on freedom to congregate as well.
I'll show them, though. If this bill passes, their offices can expect to regularly hear from a mariachi band over the phone.
That's right. 100 phone calls to the offices of Senators. With a mariachi band. Daily.
YES it's a reasonable reaction. Why wouldn't it be?
I'm apparently not the only person worried about this bill. When I called one of their offices and said that I'd like to express my concern about Senate Bill 1, the person taking my call said "Section 220?" I even had to be put on hold for a while, so I'm guessing that they've received a fair number of calls by now, at least in Indiana.
