What a lovely crunchy quality they have. And these sachets of brown sauce go perfectly. Top quality nourishment.

The Isle of Wight is one of the few parts of England that has a totally Red Squirrel population - everywhere else has the horrid Grey things. I mean, is a grey squirrel really a squirrel? No - it's a worthless grey wreck.
On the Island there are squirrel bridges etc, and everyone does all they can to save our beloved Red Squirrel population from the invading evil Grey.

In my part of Canada, we have Grey squirrels too, but they come in both Gray and Black. There are Red squirrels around too, but they don't like the city much, so we don't see them. My backyard has about a million resident squirrels, give or take a few, which delight in unplanting anything that I plant (just in case I hid anything yummy underneath, I suppose). Makes for frustrating gardening. I live-trap them and take them to a park, some distance away, on the far side of a river. Two years ago, I transported 37 of them. Last year I took a break, and this year, I have been transporting for 2 weeks (had to wait until the babies were out of the nest, fending for themselves), and have taken 8 to the park. Still looks like squirrel city in my back yard, though.
I'll love to try a squirrel fritter, a squirrel-on-a-stick, some squirrel pie and any other squirrel dishes you have there (do you have squirrel stew? squirrel and chips? maccaroni and squirrel? squirrel soufle? squirrel a la king? squirrel cheesecake? ...)

Squirrel on a stick? Are we in some sort of High Fantasy world? If so, great, I'll have a 'kin 'ot potato to go with it please.

Well if we are having squirrel, better have some beers then.
*opens rucksack and passes cans around. Sticks two in his hat, fits straws and sits back slurping and relaxing.*
Sqirrel fritters make a nice change to McSwineys.

Ah... McSwineys... home of the galaxy-famous Porcuswine burger!
Well, if it's beer time, could you please pass me a couple of cans... one to enable me to forget about the insanely large number of squirrels (albeit dead) that have suddenly appeared here, and the other to enable me to forget about the insanely large number of squirrels (albeit dead) that have suddenly appeared here.
I realise that this is, technically, one reason, but it's such a major one I thought it was worth mentioning twice.
Ah, that's better!

Did anyone here see the first series of cook on the wild side with Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall (or something like that). At one point he actually trapped grey squirels in the new forrest and barbqued them on sticks.

Sorry Phil, never heard of it, perhaps it only showed south of the border.

Possibly, it was a channel 4 thing. In the first series he lived out of the back of a converted landrover, cooking what he could gather or catch. The second series had him on a small canal boat. He also did another series, living in a cottage and growing and bartering what he could. They were quite good cookery progs.

Ah yes, I saw a few of the 'Living & Bartering' one, it was repeated sometime in the last 6 months. he had a big party at the end, with lots of bartering for bales of hay and stuff, inc a whole sheep for spit roasting! Don't remember anything about squirrels though. Might have been in one of the earlier series.

The squirels one was in the first series.
The end of the last one also had him barbieing some pork he'd reared himelf as well.

I remember reading something during the whole Mad Cow Disease thing about a study of CJD (the human variety) in the US. They found a correlation between having CJD and eating squirrels. So I think I will stick to the beer thanks.

I saw the program about cooking the placenta. The woman who birthed it invited a load of her mates round to tuck in. If I had a mate like that I'd have her sectioned.

I wish I hadn't mentioned those sodding squirrels now.
Opened a whole can of worms.
Now... there's an idea... anyone for a lunchtime snack?

Bluebottle Posted Jun 21, 2000
I hope we're fishing with the worms and not eating them...
