Marmite and banana

I was under the impression (obviously wrongly) that it was impossible to eat Marmite and then eat a banana afterwards as the potassium in the banana reacts with the yeast in the Marmite to cause severe vomiting ...?
Also ... does anyone know exactly what the benefits are to "tapping" Marmite on toast/bread to turn it white ...?
Does it improve the flavour or something ...?
