h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

That was a good year, that was. Looking back on my resolutions for 2003, I can say that I achieved most of them in some style.

At the start of the year, I said that I'd do more acting and scriptwriting. In March I appeared in a production of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', in October I was back on stage performing some new short plays written by other people, and in November I had a short drama that I wrote performed by the Bradford University Theatre Group. I've completed a scriptwriting course at the same University, and expanded my playlet into a 30-minute screenplay.

I said that I wanted to lose more weight, and I end 2003 a stone and a half lighter than I began it. I said that I'd stay off the at least until June 22, when I'd have clocked up one sober year. I got to June and decided I had no wish to remind myself what a felt like, so I've stayed off the . I also said that I wanted to become a conniosseur of ; and, right now, I'm toasting the imminent arrival of 2004 with a nice cup of Chai.

In fact, about the only things I didn't quite manage from my 2003 resolutions were the ones that would have needed me to spend a lot more time online. I wasn't able to do those things because I was kept busy by other good things that happened and which I didn't anticipate 12 months ago. I had three and a half great months at the Mind The... Gap Theatre company, an experience that taught me that full-time work can actually be enjoyable and fulfilling. And then I got to go to University, something I didn't ever expect to be able to do. That adventure is far from over, and I have a lot of coursework to do over the first three weeks of the new year: but so far, so good.

Which brings me to consider what I'd like for 2004. To a large extent, I'd like more of the same. I still need to slim down some more, so I must keep up my visits to the University Sports Centre and cut down on the after tonight. I shall look for more acting opportunities. I will also start listening to Radio 4, because it's become a specific ambition of mine to get a piece of my drama on the BBC, and I want to find out what sort of thing they put on there.

And beyond that, the ambitions I have are the big ones: to find regular paid employment, and to get some in my life. I'll start seriously job-searching in late January, as soon as I've discharged my University obligations. As for the other ambition, who knows what 2004 will bring, but in a bid to help along I've signed up to an online dating site. When I was semi-permanently , I wouldn't have wanted to inflict myself on anyone. These days, I can actually imagine someone in her right mind fancying me. We'll see.

So I look back with some satisfaction, and look forward to learning more in 2004. All that remains is to wish that the coming 12 months bring you everything you'd wish for yourself. Whatever, here we go!

I did have a plan to do a writing up of my New Year Wishes - which deliberately are not Resolutions - and remain determined to do so. I just haven't had the online time to spare ot do so properly - and I don't wan't to do them half-baked...

that's pretty impressive - you've inspired me to put down my resolutions in my journal (although i haven't done it yet)

my sole resolution for last year was to wear the bikini that i bought (first one ever for me), which i managed to do a bit of, not as much as hoped, but i'm going to laze about in the sun in it once i've finished writing this.

my resolution for 2000 was to wear sensible shoes, which i'm still holding true to - although i've been looking at some less sensible types lately with some desire - i've never been a big shoe person, but i do feel that there is a wardrobe gap in the area of snazzy shoes with a small heel (my bf is the same height as me )

Hey Ormy, it's wonderfull to see your life coming together, I'm especialy pleased about the drink pixelating well done that man! (it's odd I was showing the Manchester meet pics to Jonathon and he said you looked like hitler, which I thought was a bit unfair since hitler was clearly black and white)

I dare not make resolutions at any time of year, in April I said I'd do more exercise, I do I think in general, I have improved my diet but not as much as I would have liked. the new job and place to work have been the turn arounds, no more family to take care of, and a good job at a good IT firm with morals. I also found my love Teru this past year not much more I can say about that since it's clear I ache when not with her. to be honest when I look back I see how incredibly luky I am this past years, I feel much happyer this year round than last for sure.

Thank you Ormy for reminding me to look back and realise I don't need resolutions because what I have is so amazing.

I've been accused of many strange things in my time, but 'Hitler lookalike?' That's a new one! I have never grown a moustache, toothbrush or otherwise, and I think he was a lot skinnier and darker-haired than me! When I was at my heaviest I did think that I was starting to look like John Prescott, and that was quite bad enough! Which pics of which Manchester meet were you looking at?

Ah well I could see that, but I thought hitler was a bit harsh too.
