Once again, I find myself posting from a public library because my computer is unwell. This time, the problem is that it seems to be unable to recognise the presence of a mouse. Whenever I switch on, I get the 'Windows cannot detect a mouse' message, even though a mouse is actually plugged in. It's not the itself that is the problem - I bought a new one, but still got the same result.
I had been having a problem for a while with the cursor suddenly seeming to get stuck, ignoring the movements of the mouse until I rebooted the computer. Sometimes a bit of unscientific fiddling about with the lead in the mouse port would fix the problem, so I suspect that it may be the mouse port that's the problem.
Whatever, I'm afraid that I won't be on here as much as usual until I can get my poor 'puter fixed. Curse that mouse hole!

I have managed to get the 'puter back in some sort of action by the rather unscientific method of running the lead upwards over the 'puter and tugging on the lead when the cursor sticks - which confirms that it is indeed the socket that's the problem. But this is just the latest in a series of serious problems I've had with my current 'puter. I can't get any sound out of it, and it isn't on speaking terms with my printer.
The time has come to get a new 'puter, and fortunately my folks have just come into some and are willing to subsidise the purchase. I've been down to my local PC World, and have my eye on a rather natty little Compaq with one of those flat screen monitors and full CD burning and DVD facilities - £700 the lot.

I'm in a similar situation, Ormy, and am about to invest in my first ever laptop. Partly prompted by a need to make the flat look less cluttered because we're about to sell it, but also because of this temporary move to Leeds for my attachment.
Just in case it's of use to you, here's a link to www.acernotebooks.co.uk - it could be worth your while looking at the deal on an Acer Aspire 1315. 40GB hard drive, CD rewriter/DVD player, the lot for £735 (although about £800 with an upgrade to 512mb of RAM). They're in Huddersfield, so you could probably save yourself the delivery charge as well.

Sounds - just got a similar Compaq/flatscreen thingy a few months ago for about the same kind of money. Which means that it was a bargain - normally prices in the UK (not to mention the US of A) are lower than in the relatively small Danish market...
Which doesn't stop my rodent from trying to drive me up the wall. Recently the little critter - a USB one - has started stopping () for a few secs and playing the USB Off/USB On sounds before moving on. Happens about once every 5-10 mins.
It is better than in the beginning where the PC just wouldn't recognise the mouse unless I crawled under the desk and un-/replugged it.

hahahaha to the lot of you I got an apple powerbook which has yet to turn round and say I couldn't do somthing, it could make toast if I didn't want the crubs getting in the key board
ok enough 86 blagging.
If I were getting a PC I'd get mine, please it's a brilliant computer for £500, 2400 XP+ AMD chip, 780MB of DDR RAM and a 20GB 7200 HDD, 64MB nVidia GForce Graphics, comes with piles of software, anything you want from my collection and the TV card and Wireless card come with it.
Darn I can't belive I'm selling it, I'm so desperate to go to the USA to see Teru.
