H2G2 Pie Chart
Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted Jan 1, 2000
Fate, maybe you have doppelgängers. I can recommend a shampoo
for that...
The H2G2 list is entirely unofficial, and has only been going
for 3 or 4 weeks. It is only advertised on ffMike's home page
because it's his list; you won't know about it unless you
stumble across his page or unless someone tells you about it.
And, since there's only 9 of us, as you say, we haven't yet
achieved critical mass. But there's a healthy correspondence
going on, nonetheless.
btw, ffMike is on pacific coast time, so allow for that when
awaiting response!

I see Lil has already answered all the important questions. I've just nipped around to Onelist and approved both of our pending members, so now we're up to ten people, woohoo! I was a tad late getting to the computer this morning...staying up till midnight is not my usual way of dealing with life! Anyhow, now that all the animals are taken care of for the morning I can return to the virtual chattiness here. See y'all on the list!

Right. Thanks for okaying me ffMike
I was under the impression that the thing worked more like a chat room. no?
And what is with these triple posting things? I am worried.. I may need that anti doplleganger shampoo yet.
Is anyone else suffering from a hangover or is it just me?

Naw, it's a mailing list, not a chat room, so watch for it in your inbox. On the other hand we are a rather chatty bunch (250 messages last month, which isn't a lot, but it's just picking up now) so don't be surprised if you get to know people.
I think Onelist allows us to set up a chat room as well, though I haven't looked into that yet. One of these days, maybe. Or maybe someone else will run with that particular ball...

OK Fate dude, this is what we mean by your quoting thing:
"Ha ha! that 'll be why I havn't been approved yet then.. or is that I didn't use Fate as a name? And how come there is only 9 people on the list? that seems a mighty small list!
Or will the h2g2 bods not advertise it too much in case it detracts from the real h2g2 stuff?"
Sometimes it seems familier, sometimes it doesn't. At the moment it's the last sentance that rings a bell.
Now, having a flooded inbox was exactly the reason why me and my friend left the Watership Down mailing list. I think I saw an option there to view all the messages on the OneList site. Am I right?
Just give me some time to get into the gist of it, OK? Thanks.
Onelist Options
Researcher 93445 Posted Jan 1, 2000
Yeah, there are several ways to view the messages from the mailing list. You can get 'em one at a time, once a day in a digest, or just read 'em at the web site. I'd recommend the one at a time method unless you're feeling overloaded; it's easier to get involved in the conversation that way.
Don't be shy, hop right in
Onelist Options
Mike A (snowblind) Posted Jan 1, 2000
I've got about 50 entries to check for new conversations. It's like you said, we need a better way to be informed that somebody is talking about your entry. Ender Wiggin has had his posting stagnating for 6 days before I found it just now.
So expect to hear from me soon .
Doppelgangers
Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted Jan 2, 2000
Hey, I just found another doppelganger by another
researcher in the HRASC forum; the same post, repeated
twice in a row. It ain't FATC's fault -- it's something
anomalous.
Or maybe not. I have a theory that h2g2 switched to a
huger server in the last 2 days, and that the switch
was not 100% smooth.

Doppelgangers
Researcher 93445 Posted Jan 2, 2000
Be interesting to see whether you can get any confirmation on that theory...the H2G2 management seems to operate largely by the "mushroom" principle, though I'm willing to be charitable and ascribe that to an overwhelming workload for the moment.
Doppelgangers
Mike A (snowblind) Posted Jan 2, 2000
Mushroom principle = tiny amount of people trying to do a workload that would cripple even the Russian workforce.
Am I right?
I'd say it's more of a mushroom cloud.

Researcher 93445 Posted Jan 2, 2000
"Mushroom management" is one of those things you learn about in engineering school. It refers to keeping workers in the dark and tossing shit on them once in a while.

Aaah, I see. I won't say too much as Peta has been polite to me a few times.
Doppelgangers
Researcher 93445 Posted Jan 2, 2000
As I think I implied above, I don't really believe there's any malice involved on the part of the H2G2 staff. They just don't have time to keep us posted on every little management decision. It's also within the realm of possibility that the consider some things proprietary and don't want to reveal them for fear of attracting competition.

Mike A (snowblind) Posted Jan 2, 2000
OK, that's fair enough.
The mailing list thing is brilliant isn't it? I think I'll do a bit more experimenting and recieve all the mail into my inbox. That sort of thing.
