I don't know if potatoes will grow on Mars (inside, of course), but Matt Damon's character lived on them for more than a year in "The Martian."
The billionaires who are talking about living on Mars have a few screws loose, in my opinion.

They do. I recommend Kelly and Mark Weinersmith's book 'City on Mars' for its excellent summary of the million reasons we're not ready to go and live there. (It won a Hugo Award.)
