How do you get the birds to sit still to be measured?

paulh, vaccinated against the Omigod Variant

The birds around here would never sit in anyone's hand like that

Walp, I reckon you caught me out there, pardner! Actually what you see here is a bit of an illusion. First of all Derek is an expert in handling birds, and I am a bit good at photography provided the subjects are close enough. Derek has a very tight hold on their legs in these photos, so they can't get away. They do actually struggle a bit, I just snap them in the split-second when they take a breather before they recommence the struggling. They do get the message after a while that they can't escape and then they can be measured but still Derek has to hold on to them very tightly with one hand and then measure them (straightening out the relevant bodyparts while also properly aligning the measuring rods) with the other.
