I saw some prairie dogs in 1968

In 1968, my family drove cross country to visit my sister, who was in Oakland (her Ensign husband was stationed at Treasure Island at the entrance to one of the big bridges in San Francisco). We took the scenic route, which took us through South Dakota. For hundreds of miles we saw signs for Wall Drug store. The signs harped on the fact that one would see prairie dogs. When we got there, Wall drug was not very big, and there were maybe a dozen prairie dogs there.

Wall drug is still there. http://www.walldrug.com/

Hello! Did they keep the prairie dogs in some kind of confinement there?
