New York: 12,000 uniformed officers in 1912, compared with 36,000 today. [Population in 1912: 3,437,202. Population in 2018: 8,336,817]
Public confidence in police departments is hard to curry, as events can get the upper hand. Witness Sept. 11, 2001, when police and firefighters were regarded as heroes for dealing with the attacks on the Twin Towers.
But every time the news media runs stories about police corruption or mishandling of sensitive cases regarding minorities, this good will can evaporate.
It's a puzzlement. But I'm glad to read that in 1912 there was progress being made.

I'm banned from New York, so couldnt possibly comment!
There was an old music hall song, If You Want To Know The Time - Ask a Policeman, apparently a lot of drunks woke up in cells without their watches back in the day!
I'm sure both constabularies worked under a lot of pressure, policing by totally different styles, very different beasts these Constables On Patrol.

Since you are such a talented writer, I hope you will make a story out of it. I would love to read about it.

I found it more easily than I expected. I also found some sympathy for your situation as the father of a dissatisfied teenaged daughter. At the end of the story, you say that you were allowed to resume your trip, but the experience soured you on New York. This was early in 2014. I say this because not everyone reading this thread will necessarily know this.

[Postscript to the preceding post]
Sometimes I am embarrassed for my country and the way it treats some foreigners. New York City is beyond my power to redeem. Boston is, too, but I could probably make a decent attempt to explain its quirks.
What do I know about the New York Police department? Well, Theodore Roosevelt was the Police Commissioner there in the late 1890s. I doubt that anyone alive cares much about that. I also enjoyed a TV series called "Barney Miller." [There's no guide entry on it.]
Yes, there were other series about N.Y. police. Don't remember much about them....

This was 2002.
I know nothing about NYPD, but I did train with Minnesota's finest. But that's another story!

TOP TIP 2020-
Never, ever, try to email DG whilst listening to Willie Nelson in the bath.
Your soapy fingers may hit the wrong keys and accidently activate the emergency call system....
Just saying....

This was far more exciting than almost anything that has happened to me. All I get is visits from large chickens, which only underlines how drab and dull my life is. (There's a Monty Python episode about an accountant.) I can't even eat library patrons; never thought to try that.
