Last week, the QI Elf tweeted something about the Icelandic version of Dracula. Within the hour, of course, the dotty Post Editor had bought the ebook.

I thought you might enjoy knowing a little bit about it. It's pretty interesting. Heck, I haven't enjoyed footnotes this much since the last Terry Pratchett novel.

There were a couple of bits I didn't quite understand:

"Unfortunately, a ship full of dead Bulgarians arrives, bringing Count Dracula (who keeps getting out of his box)." - Count Dracula was pretending to be a dead Bulgarian in order to travel to England?

"lay her restless spirit with a stake to the heart." - lay her spirit?

In reverse order:

Yes, 'lay her spirit'. That is the correct term. You 'lay' a ghost or other spirit.

I'm guessing you've never read 'Dracula'? The ship full of Bulgarian sailors have all been killed by Dracula on the journey. He got hungry. Since your confusion is evidence that not everyone knows this, I shall reword.

You're guessing correctly I've been to Whitby, though, so I know general details rather than specifics.

Ah, I'd not heard of 'lay' on its own in this context, although I have heard 'lay to rest'.

So at the start of the story, Dracula is undead, but pretends to be alive so that the solicitor can sort out his affairs. Then Dracula travels to England by pretending to be dead so that he can bring his box and crates of Transylvanian soil with him, but he keeps getting out of his box
