For a while, I tended to go for Cronenberg's films. "Scanners" was morbidly fascinating. I kept waiting or heads to explode. "Videodrome" had the image of someone being sucked into a television.
Those were among his early films, before he went mainstream with "Dead Ringers," "Naked lunch," "The fly" and "Dead zone."
He also has had a modest career as an actor, in "Barney's version," and "Into the night," among others. I thought that I saw him in "Necropolis," but ImDB doesn't seem to list him.

You may be thinking of Nightbreed, in which he definitely appears (the films were both made in the late 80s and have vaguely similar plots).
I think there are more film directors who have cameos in Into the Night than in any other movie: Jim Henson, Roger Vadim, Don Siegel, Jack Arnold, Jonathan Demme, and many, many more...
