I honestly had trouble with this film while I was watching it. Was Jojo's imaginary Hitler funny because the filmmakers were trying to mock Hitler, or because Jojo's mindset was basically happy and trusting? or a little of both? Or something else? If so, what?
I thought that the roles of Jojo and his heavyset friend were performed quite wonderfully. I'm happy to see Sam Rockwell any time (after all, he was wonderful in the movie version of H2G2. I like to cheer for the home team 
).
But isn't the sight of people hanging in the town square a bit dark for a comedy, even a dark comedy? Even for an innocent child of Jojo's Age, wouldn't the preceding four or five years of war have left an impression on his spirit? If not, is he not very bright? This is a dilemma for a filmmaker, who is showing the audience something for the first time, but knowing that the characters must have a credible backstory. Have people never been hanged in that town square before? Possibly, but would you want to bet the farm on that point?
