The meme of a litany of suffering involving shortages and deprivation. It's a recurring theme in Burns' Civil War letters. Like 'we've run out of flour, we're eating ground-up corn cobs,' 'you can cook rats, they're tasty', stuff like that. 
Only on Twitter, they were complaining about latte and avocado toast....
