I really liked this Dmitri. It's so true, and it extends to academic writing too. Lectures are very similar to sermons in this way, a wall chosen analogy or example can really convey your point. But a badly chosen one will lose your students.

I still remember vividly my Biology prof's lecture/demonstration on 'beer bottles and evolution'. It was a well-chosen analogy.
