Helooo!

Here is my entry about online communities (and advertising). As THIS is an online community I am torn between selecting peer review or collaborative writing workshop, as I think it would be a very interesting outcome to have a community written entry about communities!

I've kept it brief but let me know your thoughts.

I have a couple of initial reactions:

1. This is way too dry. Try giving us a hook at the beginning. Tell us what you want us to learn. Then tell us.

2. Rewrite this in your own words. I had the feeling when reading that I was looking at copy + paste. I ran a few random sentences through Google, and indeed, they were word-for-word from your sources. Since you didn't use direct quotes, this isn't a good idea.

I'd say, resynthesise the ideas. Also, break your topics up under headers to point us in the direction of the flow of your story.

The history of advertising and online communities is huge: why not pick one aspect and go from there?

Also take a look at these entries already in the Guide, to make sure you aren't duplicating effort:

Gnomon - time to move on

Peer Review or Collaborative Writing Workshop? That's an easy one. We haven't got a Collaborative Writing Workshop. It was removed about 7 years ago. But unfortunately, its name still lurks in some places, surprising people.smiley - monster

Thanks - I will look at my quotes more and work on a revision. I don't think I doubling up too much on the articles that you shared. My intention with writing this was to give a history on the evolution of advertising on (or to) online communities.

After leaving the BBC's ownership, the new h2g2.com does now have advertising on its Pliny skin.

On the whole I find the evolution from

advertising
to targeted advertising based on the site,
to snooping the browsing habits of the individual

intrusive anoying, and counter productive as for the advertiser as I activly avoid the product advertised.smiley - smiley
