Why are the proofreading marks used to make corrections on a paper so weird looking?

Heh - probably just to confuse normal people so that you have to do expensive training courses to proofread stuff (or have to pay someone to decipher it for you)

There aren't *that* many of them.

But it comes from the old paper-and-pen method of writing. And they had to be distinctive.
But nobody bothers much anymore, now that you can do corrections in Word.
