I hear your voice, and I think,
“Don’t ever leave me.
Just stay here
And never stop talking.”
And I say:
“Tell me about Von Neumann machines.”
So you do.
And because robots excite you,
You talk for half an hour,
The most I’ve ever gotten out of you.
Your eyes light up as you explain,
And you don’t care that your hair has come undone
From the ponytail you always confine it to.
Robots aren’t my thing,
So I think about the last time
I saw you with your hair down
And let your voice wash over me.
You are so easily excited,
Like when I got you a jar of pickles
As a going away present.
I love your face when you are excited,
And that thing you do with your shoulders
When something makes you a little uncomfortable.
So easily done, that.
Such a childish feeling I have for you,
More hero-worship than anything else.
You are better than me at the things that I do,
It makes you both intimidating and alluring.
But if that is all it is,
Why do I still miss you?
Why won’t it fade?
I just want to see your face,
Hear your voice
As you tell me about Thomas Pinchon.
