The only question I have is are you able to explain the comment 'like the elephant song' for a ?

I think they mean like the trumpeting of the elephant. It does say 'song', though.
also, 'une véritable barbe' is literally 'a real beard', so it's a pune, as Terry Pratchett says.
Maybe add a footnote to the end of the sentence and say, 'Literally, a real beard.' Let the reader figure the rest out, or shrug and say, 'French.'
