Hi Dmitri
I don't know if you noticed, but I have been running our own h2g2 off-track betting for the Kentucky Derby over in Ask.
If you have an empty corner I'm sure everyone would get a kick out of seeing the results in the Post, if you have already put her to bed - no problem.

I'm sorry. We had the Post done long before that - I'm afraid we need more lead time.
If you'd like to write up a summary of the fun, though, you can email it to us for next week.

I hope to pick up a copy of Harper Lee's new release tomorrow, have you heard anything about it?

Wow! I didn't even know about it. Thanks for letting me know - now I'll know to look for it.
Would you like to write the review when you've read it? We would be glad to have it at , of course.

It will probably take a few weeks to get through, I don't have as many pleasure reading hours as I would like.
From the little I have read in the press it is a pre-quill or sequel to 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' Apparently this was the first manuscript she sent to the publisher and they asked her to base a story on just the flash-backs, which is the story we know and love.
This seems to take place more in the era of the civil-rights movements. I will be quite interested to see how much of 'Mocking Bird' re-emerges.
Some of the critics feel that Atticus Finch is not quite as understanding as we might like, but I will wait to form my own opinion.
I think I will love to write a review for But let me get back to you - one way or the other.
I do not want to write a negative review. Apparently the Authoress is no longer in a position to make meaningful comments She is living in an assisted living facility.

I have found the first chapter in the Guardian. I am in , as always.
She makes me laugh so hard, and miss my older relatives so much...
'Cousin Joshua was moved across the tracks and placed in state accommodations for the irresponsible...' I think I shall die laughing...
Watch everybody else worry about the politics. That book's pure time travel.
Unfortunately, it will be a month before I can read the print book - the laser surgery's not till the end of July.
But do tell us what you think of it. And I can look forward to more of Harper Lee's prose...

I get you!
And I'm already inspired to do a h2g2 Literary Corner making full mock of Sidney Lanier, since she's mentioned him and I had to try to explain him to Elektra...
...who promptly pronounced him every bit as bad as William Topaz MacGonagle.

A fantastic read
You have something to look forward to after your surgery, I am sorry you have to wait
It will be a couple weeks before I will be ready to submit my piece as I want to let it sink in a bit, and I want to re-read 'Mockingbird' so I can refresh my memories about a few of the characters.
I think I understand why it took 60 years to publish, read my comment to A87738538, but it is an excellent presentation of the subject.
Although I am sure it will have a wide group of supporters, I think you must have met and understood some of the families and towns of the Old South for full appreciation.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.
We got the book at Walmart - for 19.98, heh-heh. Elektra devoured it and loved it. She's a good test, because she's educated, familiar with more than one culture, and patient with all of them.
I've made it through Chapter 3 with the help of a magnifying sheet. It's slow going, but I'm getting a lot out of it.
I can see where an editor could have sharpened this - I'm referring to a few of her narrative techniques. But she's like a force of nature. Those characters leap off the page. Wow.
And you're right - it helps to know the players. And the time and place. Boy, has she nailed them. To the wall. Aunt Alexandra, boy how I know her...

Finally finished it. Sore muscles from holding up the magnifying glass. But worth it.
And I think I know why everybody was confused...
But an amazing book.

*Spoiler Alert*
I think most of the critics have made the same mistake as scout, putting Atticus on a pedestal, beyond fault.
I thought the final sentence was perfect - She is starting to learn
