Oh, and now I have listened to this Motörhead version (boy, that name sounds funny), I agree - theirs is remarkable. Also, I can understand the lyrics.

Some people think it was 'mondegreens' - words you think you hear when you don't know the lyrics. In which case, these 'guardians of morals' should be ashamed of themselves.
The lyrics themselves are utterly innocuous, about a rose and such.

Thanks for the link to the FOIA file - great to see the detail of the controversy. This topic was covered on QI, and it was fascinating how the lyrics being sung could be heard to match both sets of lyrics that were written on the screen, even though the sets are very different!

Too true! That happens a lot - I confess to a mondegreen of my own in tomorrow's Post Editorial.
This song sounds like they had potatoes in their mouths. And were drunk. This is definitely 'rock and/or roll', as the pastor said on 'The Simpsons'.
