...that's what they say when the butler mumbles in the doorway.

It was a dark and stormy night. In fact, that's the most magnificent thunderstorm I've ever seen in an early talkie (1931). James Whale was a whale of a director.

And JB Priestley was a witty novelist. The script for 'The Old Dark House' is side-splittingly funny.

The plot, such as it is: It's raining in Wales. Half the mountain nearly falls on the Wavertons - Raymond Massey and Gloria Stuart. They're mad at each other at the moment, but terribly (sorry, 'teddibly') in love. They take refuge, sort of, in the weirdest house they can find, even in the neighbourhood of Shrewsbury. The people in this house would give the Addams Family the creeps. Then Charles Laughton shows up with what I believe to be a Yorkshire accent...

Great lines:

'We make our own electricity. We aren't very good at it.'

'Have a potato.'

'Mwahahaha!'

I'd been searching for this since yesterday, and found it on Youtube. Here it is:

A word about Gloria Stuart: You see that beautiful woman? You know her. You DO.

Remember Rose in 'Titanic'? No, not Kate Winslet. The OTHER one. The 102-year-old one. That was Gloria Stuart. Gloria played the Invisible Man's gf back in 1933. She was gorgeous. Heck, she was gorgeous at 90, when she played the Invisible Man's grandmother in the TV series. She was an artist, as well, and lived to be 100. I was looking for Gloria Stuart films, which is how I found this one.

You want a chuckle? Do watch this goody. The house is definitely dark, but the humour is quirky, and the story, though light, is fun.

Well I watched the first thirty minutes ... will watch the rest when I have time ... so far I liked it a lot! The opening with them in the car and the rain and the landslides was very suspenseful ... I can relate to that much more than to the situations found in any horror movies.

*many* horror movies ... most of them you just don't give a hoot for the characters and its fun to see them offed. In this case I really want to see how things turn out for them.
