A Conversation for John Kettley - Weatherman (and people mentioned in the same song)

I guess you're right that David Steel, former Liberal leader, has never lived in Keele. But what about David Steele, former Northants batsman and England's hero against Australia - Lillee, Thommo and all - in 1975? Steele was borne in Bradley, Staffordshire - just 24 miles from Keele.

Why on earth the song should mention THAT David Steele is a mystery - but there again so are most of the other lyrics.

Thanks for that information. smiley - ok

We considered a number of David Steel(e)s when compiling this Entry - I don't think that one even got a mention. On the face of it, the Liberal politician seemed the most likely.

David Steele the Test Cricketer was certainly from Staffordshire.

What mystifies me is "that one" didn't "even got a mention". He was the biggest sports star in England in 1975 and BBC sports personality of the year. (One of only three cricketers to be so - although Freddie Flintoff will almost certainly be the next.) To this day he is still a legend - "The bank clerk who went to war". (He was the subject of a video in the 90's - Lillee's clash with Steele.)

David Steel the Liberal Leader had never crossed my mind until I found this web page.

There is just a tinge of Half Man Half Biscuit about Tribe of Toffs, although not quite as sharp.
